Our Origin
The Central Fraser Valley Woodcarvers Club
Our club was founded in 1988 when a small group of wood carvers got together and decided to meet at regular times to support and learn from each other. In 1990 the club was incorporated as a non-profit society under the name CENTRAL FRASER VALLEY WOOD CARVING SOCIETY . The first executives ( board of directors ) were Armour Green, Werner Falk, Paddy Birchall, Roland Rempel, Harry Sayers, and Harold Heppner. The carvers came from Langley, Aldergrove, Clearbrook, Mission and Chilliwack hence the name Central Fraser Valley.
The Club grew and expanded, one of the founding members was part of the Highschool in Abbotsford and the Club got permission to use the Woodworker’s Shop in the Highschool every Wednesday evening. This was a great help as they could use all the woodworking tools that none of them had at home.
After a period of time the Club decided they needed an income besides their annual membership dues. It was decided to hold a Woodcarver show. In this show they would display all their achievements to the public. This would increase public awareness and hopefully their membership. They would hire professional carvers as judges and would have all their carvings judged. The show started 24 years ago and has grown into a successful annual event.
There are men and women in the club and contrary to popular belief the ladies in our club are very talented carvers. Some ladies are every bit as good and some better than the male carvers.
We still have our Wednesday night carving sessions at which we also hold classes (courses) for beginners. Some of our members have attended carving schools in Red Deer Alberta and Sorrento BC. The general skill level in our club is compatible to any of the other carving clubs in BC.
